The first facet

I began cutting and sewing the rags onto one facet of the diamond pattern.

It took me a while to figure it out the order to stitch the rags onto the pattern piece. There was some unpicking involved but after a little practice I got this much done:

the beginnings of a patchwork diamond made using painting rags. A black and white image of a solitaire diamond ring on a finger pokes out from under the fabric diamond facet.

I’ll save all those little bits on the left. I’ll either stitch them all together and use it in this diamond or use them to make another smaller fabric diamond.

A finger pointing to a facet of a diamond. The fabric beginnings of a patchwork diamond made using painting rags. A black and white image of a solitaire diamond ring on a finger pokes out from under the fabric diamond facet.

This is the ‘star’ facet I’m working on.

The blue stripe isn’t dark enough. I may redo that piece next time or leave it and make it darker some other way…paint leftover paint on it? Embroider over it? Stitch another piece on top?

I need to be careful that I don’t get too caught up in ‘following the rules’ and making this like a ‘proper’ quilt. I caught myself several times unpicking what I’d just done because I felt it wasn’t the ‘correct’ way to sew it. But I’m an artist, I can make up my own way of making it!
