Valley of Fire
This body of work is a reflection of experiences I had from a recent trip to Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada, USA.
The overwhelming sense of space juxtaposed with the claustrophobic and imposing intensity of the heat and the vertical scale of the landscape. I have represented this dry land with layers of water colour to utilise the chalky after-math of the paint as it dries to a grainy surface.
The delicate details I remember of the oppressive, hot, rocky terrain are drawn with water colour pencil and soft pastel. My aim is to recreate my awe of the intensity of the immediate surroundings and the vast masses of space that stretched forever into the horizon.
