The Making of a Silk Dress Coat – Part 4: Sewing the Coat

The planning, painting and embroidery are done – now it’s sewing time!

Sewing a bespoke formal evening dress coat with hand painted silk taffeta.

Starting the Sewing:

I left my hand painted silk in the hands of my dressmaker Svetlana Khmelevskaya from 1st Lady Dressmaking. Here she is in her studio, cutting out the coat pieces. She pinned the pattern pieces to the silk before cutting them out. I’d be happy too with all that light coming through the window and her big cutting table!

Dressmaker Svetlana is cutting out the dress coat using the sewing pattern pieces she drafted.

The individual coat pieces are tacked together and lightly pressed, ready for the next fitting with the client. It’s important not to press the fabric too much at this stage because it can permanently crease and the fit may still need to be adjusted.

Here I am with Svetlana, checking up on the progress. So far, so good! The coat is looking fabulous with the pink dress underneath!

The Fitting with the Client:

The bespoke dress coat is fitted along with the pink dress that will be worn underneath. Adjustments are made to the sleeves and the neckline.

The fitting with the dressmaker is successful! This bespoke hand painted dress coat is ready to be finished!

This is what the back of the coat looks like so far:

After the fitting the hem length is decided. The coat fits the client perfectly!

It’s a perfect fit! Svetlana has done a great job with the sewing as always. The next step is to add the lining and finish sewing the coat. When Svetlana is done I’ll take the coat back to add the final embellishments! (Did anyone say sparkles?!) :)

Making a Hand Painted Gold Fish Silk Top

22 April, 2016

Hand painted silk with gold fish
These two friendly goldfishes have been hand painted on silk. I painted the silk so that when made into a top it would wrap around the body and join with a single seam at the back. Preparing the painting Before I started painting directly onto the silk, I painted a quick, life size study with acrylic paint on butcher's paper. […]
